CM Punjab acts on hazardous power lines in Lahore

Date:

(Web Desk) – Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has started taking practical measures to protect the province from incidents caused by hanging and disorganized electricity wires, which have led to short circuits, electrocution, and fires.

The first phase of the master plan will focus on removing hazardous power lines in the provincial capital, Lahore. The project aims to prevent accidents during events like Basant by eliminating dangerous overhead wires in the inner city.

During the underground wiring operation, the chief minister has instructed that alternative electricity supply be ensured to avoid power outages for citizens.

The proposal to divide Lahore into three zones and gradually move the power lines underground is also under review.

A principle decision has been made to make underground wiring mandatory in both new and existing housing schemes. A steering committee, which will oversee the project, has been set up, including provincial ministers, officials from LESCO, housing authorities, local government, and administrative officers.

To prevent fires and the loss of human lives due to short circuits, the Chief Minister has requested an urgent safety plan.

Lesco officials briefed the government, stating that Lahore currently has around 40,000 kilometers of power lines and 50,000 kilometers of internet cables spread across the city.

Furthermore, the chief minister emphasized that the government aims to prevent tragedies similar to the Gul Plaza incident in Karachi.

She added that power lines during rain cause accidents, and disorganized wires not only look unsightly but also pose a constant threat to human life.
