Elon Musk’s satellite internet service provides critical connectivity as authorities enforce strict communication shutdowns.
Amid Iran’s deadly crackdown on nationwide protests, some citizens are using Starlink satellite internet to bypass the government-imposed blackout. While fiber-optic and mobile networks remain largely down, Starlink beams directly from low-earth orbit satellites, providing limited but crucial connectivity in border towns and select cities. Internet monitoring groups confirm that the blackout continues at around 1% of normal levels, making Starlink a lifeline for residents, journalists, and activists.
Starlink has been deployed in other global conflict zones, including Ukraine, Myanmar, and Sudan, highlighting its role as a critical tool in areas where governments restrict communication. Though unlicensed in Iran, the service has remained partially active despite threats of legal penalties and technical disruptions. Elon Musk and SpaceX have previously supported access in conflict zones, underscoring the influence of private satellite networks in geopolitical crises.
