Dealers seek relief from strict used car import rules

Date:

KARACHI (Web Desk) – All Pakistan Motor Dealers Association urged the Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to immediately review and lift the strict conditions on commercial imports of used cars.

In a letter addressed to the PM, All Pakistan Motor Dealers Association Chairman Haji Mohammad Shehzad said that the government has already abolished the personal baggage scheme, which will stop earning foreign exchange.

Now the vehicles will only be imported through the Transfer of Residence and Gift Scheme. H.M. Shehzad said that the Economic Coordination Committee already extended the import period from two years to three years.

He said that at the same time, there is great disappointment among those who deal in used cars. H.M. Shehzad said that 40,000 used cars were imported during the last year.

He said that overseas Pakistanis send $700 million in customs duty along with vehicles and imported vehicles will remain non-transferable for one year.

H.M. Shehzad said that commercial safety and environmental standards will be applied to imported vehicles.

Earlier on December 9, 2025, the government banned the import of used cars under the baggage scheme and tightened restrictions for the other two schemes, including a minimum three-year stay abroad, restricting competition for foreign firms in breach of commitments made to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
