ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – India’s continuous violations of the Indus Waters Treaty have intensified.
According to the latest situation, India has almost stopped sharing crucial river-flow data with Pakistan.
Sources say India now only informs Pakistan whether incoming river flows are at a high or low flood level, but does not provide actual figures—especially discharge in cusecs—which are mandatory under the treaty.
The Secretary of the Ministry of Water Resources has revealed that India no longer shares information through the Indus Water Commissioner and instead communicates via the Foreign Office, which is a clear violation of the agreement.
Due to the lack of accurate data, Pakistan has been forced to rely on satellite imagery, which carries an error margin of nearly 25%. This increases the risk of miscalculations, raising the chances of flooding and potential damage.
According to the Foreign Office, India contacted Pakistan in August and September following heightened tensions in May. Between August 24 and September 10, India notified Pakistan 18 times, with the Foreign Office receiving 18 note verbales.
However, these notifications were incomplete and lacked essential details.
Officials say India’s conduct amounts to persistent and serious violations of the Indus Waters Treaty, undermining the formal channel of the Indus Water Commissioners and affecting Pakistan’s water management and early warning measures.
