Pakistan’s 27th Amendment Draft Proposes Lifetime Shield for President

Date:

Islamabad – A proposed amendment to Pakistan’s Constitution would grant the President lifetime immunity from legal proceedings, arrest, or punishment. The provision has been included in the draft of the 27th Constitutional Amendment following a demand by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), according to sources.

Coalition parties are actively reviewing and revising the draft, adding and removing clauses. Among the newly added provisions is a significant change to Article 248-B, which states that no criminal case can ever be filed against the President, nor can the President be arrested or penalized—even after leaving office.

Sources confirm that the PPP raised this demand during discussions in the joint parliamentary committee, and the clause was subsequently incorporated into the amendment draft.

The proposal has sparked debate over its implications for accountability and governance, with legal experts and political observers closely monitoring its progress through the legislative process.
