Karachi youth back calls for new administrative units amid civic crisis

Young residents express frustration over deteriorating roads, delayed development projects and limited employment opportunities, arguing that greater local authority could improve governance and accountability.

KARACHI, PAKISTAN — WEB DESK: Young residents of Karachi have expressed support for the establishment of new administrative units in Pakistan, saying the city’s worsening civic conditions and persistent governance problems require changes to the existing administrative system.

Young people voiced frustration over deteriorating infrastructure, prolonged development projects and limited employment opportunities. They argued that smaller administrative units could bring decision-making closer to residents and improve accountability.

Karachi’s infrastructure problems fuel frustration

The young residents highlighted the city’s deteriorating roads and delays in completing major development projects.

They particularly pointed to University Road, saying reconstruction work had remained incomplete despite six to seven years having passed.

They also complained that construction projects across Karachi frequently continue for years without reaching completion, creating difficulties for commuters and residents.

According to the young residents, the city’s infrastructure problems reflect wider shortcomings in urban planning and public service delivery.

Youth raise concerns over unemployment

Employment opportunities were another major concern raised by Karachi’s young population.

They said the city lacked sufficient employment opportunities for young people and that inadequate facilities were making it difficult for them to pursue better educational and professional futures.

They stressed that local communities should have greater authority over administrative matters affecting their neighbourhoods.

According to the residents, empowering local representatives could improve accountability and help authorities respond more quickly to public concerns.

Debate over new administrative units gains momentum

The latest expressions of support from Karachi’s youth come amid a broader national debate over establishing smaller provinces and administrative units to improve governance.

On November 4, Radio Pakistan also reported that Karachi residents had voiced support for new administrative arrangements, citing the city’s growing population and administrative challenges.

The debate has also drawn political attention. Different political leaders and parties have presented varying positions on the creation of new provinces, administrative restructuring and strengthening local governments.

However, the creation of new provinces involves constitutional and political considerations, while administrative reforms and empowered local governments represent separate policy approaches.
