Vote counting continues in several US election races following the November 3 midterm elections, with Alaska, Mississippi and dozens of House contests awaiting final results.
WASHINGTON, UNITED STATES — WEB DESK: Vote counting continued in several races following the November 3, 2026, US midterm elections, although Democrats had already secured control of both chambers of Congress, dealing a major setback to President Donald Trump’s Republican Party.
According to results reported by the Associated Press and cited by Express News, Democrats had secured 240 seats in the House of Representatives, compared with 147 for Republicans. Results in 48 congressional districts were still pending as of November 5.
The outstanding House results are not expected to change control of the chamber, as Democrats have already crossed the 218-seat threshold required for a majority.
Two Senate Races Await Final Results
The Senate picture was also largely settled, with Democrats securing 54 seats against 44 for Republicans, according to the figures reported by Express.
Two Senate races, in Alaska and Mississippi, remained undecided.
Even if Republicans win both outstanding contests, they would not reach a majority, leaving Democrats with control of the chamber based on the reported results.
Governor Elections Also Remain Undecided
The Express report also identified outstanding gubernatorial contests in Kansas and Alaska.
Meanwhile, several House races across states including Colorado, New York, Florida, Arizona and Virginia remained among those awaiting final results.
Vote-counting procedures vary between US states, particularly for mail-in and provisional ballots. Close margins and state-specific election rules can also delay the announcement of final results.
Iran War Emerges as an Issue in Republican Defeat
The election results have also intensified debate within the Republican Party over the reasons behind its losses.
Trump acknowledged that the war with Iran and its impact on energy prices had contributed to the party’s poor performance.
Vice President JD Vance also pointed to the conflict as a factor behind the Republican setback.
Democrats’ gains have shifted control of Congress, potentially complicating Trump’s legislative agenda during the remaining two years of his presidential term.
Official Results Still Subject to Certification
Although media organisations have projected winners in many contests, outstanding ballots must still be counted and election results certified under individual state laws.
Alaska’s Senate race also involves ranked-choice voting procedures if no candidate secures the required first-choice majority. Overseas ballots and other outstanding votes could affect the final outcome.
The remaining counts are therefore important for determining the final seat distribution, even though control of Congress has already been established by the reported race calls.
