The 41-year-old forward brings his 23-year international career towards an end after announcing he will hand back Portugal’s No. 7 shirt following the November international break.
LISBON, PORTUGAL — WEB DESK: Portuguese football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from the national team, bringing his 23-year international career towards an end after setting records for appearances and goals in men’s international football.
The 41-year-old forward announced his decision on Thursday, November 5, through a video message shared on social media. He said he would hand back Portugal’s iconic No. 7 shirt after the November international break.
Ronaldo described the decision as difficult, saying his journey with the national team, which began in August 2003, had changed his life.
Ronaldo’s emotional farewell message
In his announcement, Ronaldo addressed the Portuguese people and reflected on the privilege of representing his country for more than two decades.
He said the No. 7 shirt had never belonged to him alone and that the time had come to pass it on to the next generation.
Ronaldo also thanked his family, teammates, coaches, staff and supporters for being part of his international journey.
“Portugal will always be a part of me,” he wrote alongside his announcement.
Record-breaking international career
Ronaldo finishes his Portugal career as the men’s international record-holder for both appearances and goals.
His record stands at:
- 234 international appearances
- 146 international goals
- 23 years representing Portugal
- Six FIFA World Cups in which he scored
He made his senior international debut in August 2003 and went on to become Portugal’s most recognisable football figure.
Portugal’s major international trophies
Ronaldo captained Portugal to its first European Championship title at Euro 2016, when the team defeated France in the final.
He also helped the national side win the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and again in 2025.
His international career included appearances at six World Cup tournaments, an unmatched achievement in men’s football.
Retirement follows tensions with Portugal coach
The announcement comes after a period of tension involving Ronaldo and Portugal coach Jorge Jesus.
During the September international window, Ronaldo left the national team camp after being left on the bench against Norway. The Portuguese Football Federation subsequently imposed a suspension and fine over his departure.
The dispute had raised questions about his future with the national side, although Ronaldo had previously indicated that he remained available for selection.
Ronaldo to continue playing for Al Nassr
Ronaldo’s announcement concerns international football and does not mean he is retiring from professional football altogether.
He is expected to continue playing for Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr, where he remains active at club level.
The Portuguese Football Federation has expressed gratitude for his contribution and said it intends to organise a special tribute to celebrate his service to the national team.
Ronaldo’s departure marks the end of a remarkable chapter in Portugal’s football history, with his records of 146 international goals and 234 appearances setting a benchmark for future generations.
