Viral Video Claims iPhones Are Floating in Sea After Cargo Ship Sinks Near Strait of Hormuz

ISLAMABAD: Videos circulating on social media have attracted widespread attention after appearing to show iPhone boxes, luxury perfume packaging and other goods floating in the sea following the sinking of a cargo ship near the Strait of Hormuz.

The footage emerged amid heightened maritime tensions in the strategic waterway, where commercial vessels have faced attacks in recent weeks. However, the videos have not been independently verified, and it remains unclear whether the smartphones shown in the clips were actually part of the sunken ship’s cargo.

Cargo ship GFS Pride sinks near Strait of Hormuz

The Singapore-flagged container ship GFS Pride sank after being damaged in an incident near the Strait of Hormuz, according to reports published on October 14 and 15, 2026.

Reuters reported that the vessel sank after being struck by a projectile and catching fire. All 21 crew members were evacuated safely, with no injuries reported. Iranian authorities, meanwhile, said the ship had struck a naval mine while travelling along what they described as an unauthorised route. The precise circumstances have been reported differently by the parties involved.

The sinking has raised concerns about the safety of commercial shipping through the waterway, which is an important route for international energy and goods transportation.

Viral footage shows floating goods

The circulating clips appear to show small boats moving among floating containers and packages in the water. Some footage has been described online as showing iPhone boxes and luxury perfumes being recovered from the sea.

However, the authenticity, location and recording date of the individual clips have not been independently established. Reports have also noted that some images circulating alongside the videos may be AI-generated, making it important to distinguish authentic footage from misleading or fabricated material.

Were the iPhones aboard the sunken ship?

The connection between the smartphones shown in the viral footage and the GFS Pride remains unconfirmed.

The ship reportedly had the capacity to carry approximately 2,824 standard containers, but a verified cargo manifest establishing what it was carrying at the time of the incident was not publicly available in the reporting reviewed. Consequently, the number, model and ownership of any smartphones allegedly lost at sea cannot be reliably established.

Claims identifying the devices as a particular iPhone model should therefore be treated cautiously unless supported by independently verified evidence.

Growing concerns over maritime security

The incident comes amid escalating threats to commercial vessels near the Strait of Hormuz. Reports of attacks and sinking ships have heightened concerns among shipping operators and maritime authorities.

The latest viral footage has drawn attention to the potential loss of commercial cargo, but the unverified smartphone claims should not be confused with the separately reported sinking of the GFS Pride.

Further confirmation of the videos’ origin, the vessel’s cargo and the circumstances surrounding the floating goods would be needed to establish the full story.

Editorial note: The sinking of the GFS Pride has been reported by multiple outlets. The claim that the viral footage shows iPhones from that specific ship remains unverified.
