K-P Emergency Triggers PSX Sell-Off as KSE-100 Drops 752 Points
KARACHI, PAKISTAN — WEB DESK | October 12, 2026
The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) came under selling pressure on Monday as political uncertainty following the imposition of governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) weighed on investor sentiment at the start of the trading week.
The benchmark KSE-100 Index fell 752.13 points, or 0.45%, to 166,337.14 by midday, according to the market snapshot reported earlier in the session. Investors remained cautious amid concerns that the province’s political situation could intensify and create further uncertainty.
The index had already declined 305.64 points to 166,783.63 by 9:43am. During the reported session, it reached an intraday high of 166,988.32 and a low of 166,002.23.
Selling spreads across major sectors
Selling pressure was reported across several key sectors, including oil marketing companies, automobile assemblers, cement producers, power companies, commercial banks, and oil and gas exploration firms.
The broad-based weakness suggested that caution extended beyond a single industry as investors assessed political and economic risks.
Political developments in K-P followed the imposition of emergency measures and governor’s rule. Reports of a police crackdown also contributed to concerns about the wider political environment.
Oil prices and economic concerns remain in focus
International oil prices moved lower in Asian trading amid expectations of increased Russian supplies and reports of a possible pause in attacks on energy infrastructure involving Russia and Ukraine.
However, concerns about wider regional tensions persisted following reports of a Houthi attack on Riyadh’s international airport. Such developments can influence investor assessments of energy supplies, commodity prices and regional risk.
Market research analyst Fawad Basir of KTrade said geopolitical uncertainty and heightened tensions in K-P were contributing to weakness in the stock market. He also pointed to inflationary pressures and the potential implications for the State Bank of Pakistan’s monetary policy decision later in October.
Interest-rate expectations, exchange-rate stability and Pakistan’s engagement with the International Monetary Fund remain important considerations for investors.
Market conditions remain fluid
The KSE-100’s reported midday decline reflects a specific point in Monday’s trading session. The index continued to fluctuate during the day, so the final closing figure may differ from the earlier snapshot.
Investors will continue to monitor political developments, commodity prices, inflation indicators and monetary-policy signals for clues about the market’s near-term direction.
