Peshawar Becomes City of Containers as Roadblocks Disrupt Daily Life

PESHAWAR, PAKISTAN — October 12, 2026: Peshawar faced extensive movement restrictions on Sunday and into Monday after emergency measures and governor’s rule were imposed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with shipping containers blocking key roads and heavy police deployments around sensitive government installations.

The restrictions disrupted routine travel across parts of the provincial capital. Several major routes were closed or narrowed, public transport services were suspended, and residents encountered difficulties reaching destinations around the city’s administrative and security zones.

Major Roads Blocked Across the City

Containers were placed at important intersections and roads, including Firdous Chowk on Grand Trunk Road, routes leading towards Khyber Bazaar and Shoba Bazaar, and access points near Bala Hisar Fort and the Peshawar cantonment.

Khyber Road and routes connecting it with surrounding areas faced restrictions, while containers at University Road and Stadium Chowk affected traffic movement. Some roads allowed limited passage, while pedestrians and motorists were directed away from restricted areas.

Police and other law-enforcement personnel were deployed in significant numbers, particularly near the Governor House, provincial government buildings and the Red Zone. Saddar remained partially accessible, but several central routes experienced major disruption.

BRT and Communication Services Affected

Peshawar’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) stations remained shut during the reported restrictions, leaving commuters to seek alternative ways to travel. Road diversions also increased pressure on surrounding routes.

Mobile phone and internet services were reported unavailable during parts of Sunday, complicating communication for residents and businesses. The timing and extent of any restoration should be confirmed through updated official information before commuters make travel plans.

The combination of road closures and communication disruptions created difficulties for people trying to navigate the city or contact family members and service providers.

Emergency and Governor’s Rule Deepen Uncertainty

The restrictions followed the federal government’s decision to impose emergency measures and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on October 11. The move suspended the elected provincial government led by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), prompting objections from the party and intensifying political tensions.

The federal government has cited security and counterterrorism concerns to justify its action. PTI has rejected the intervention and challenged its legitimacy.

Security arrangements in Peshawar have therefore become a visible part of the province’s wider political and administrative crisis.

Residents Await Normalisation

The duration of the roadblocks and the timetable for restoring normal transport and communication services remained uncertain in the reports available for this article.

Residents should check current traffic advisories and official transport updates before travelling, particularly around the cantonment, government buildings and major intersections.

The immediate challenge for authorities is to maintain security while ensuring that essential movement, public transport and everyday activities can resume as soon as conditions permit.
