Karachi Imposes Section 144 for 10 Days, Bans Public Gatherings

Date:

Karachi Enforces Section 144 Until October 20, Restricts Public Gatherings

KARACHI, PAKISTAN — WEB DESK: The Karachi administration has imposed restrictions under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure across the city from October 11 to October 20, banning protests, rallies, sit-ins and public gatherings involving more than five people.

Karachi Commissioner Syed Hasan Naqvi issued the order amid concerns that demonstrations and road blockages were disrupting traffic, affecting daily life and creating security risks.

The restrictions apply across Karachi Division, according to the notification reported by multiple news organisations.

Which Activities Are Prohibited?

Under the order, the following activities are prohibited during the specified period:

  • Public gatherings involving more than five people.
  • Protests and demonstrations.
  • Rallies and processions.
  • Sit-ins and similar public assemblies.

Authorities have directed the relevant police officials to enforce the restrictions and take legal action against violations.

The order is intended to prevent gatherings that could obstruct public roads, disrupt normal commercial activities or create law-and-order problems.

Why Has Karachi Imposed the Restrictions?

The notification cites reports from the Sindh Home Department and police officials about demonstrations and sit-ins on major roads, intersections and roundabouts.

According to the administration, such activities can cause severe traffic congestion, disrupt routine travel and obstruct emergency services. Road closures may also restrict access to hospitals and interfere with essential public services.

Officials said the restrictions were necessary to protect public safety, maintain order and ensure the movement of emergency vehicles and other essential services.

What Does Section 144 Mean for Residents?

Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure gives authorities the power to impose temporary restrictions to address potential threats to public safety and public order.

For Karachi residents, the current notification specifically restricts the listed gatherings and protest activities through October 20.

The order should not be interpreted as a blanket shutdown of the city or a general ban on ordinary travel and commercial activity.

Residents planning demonstrations or public events should check the applicable notification and seek clarification from the relevant authorities where necessary.

Restrictions Remain in Force Until October 20

The restriction period runs from October 11 through October 20, 2026. Authorities have instructed police to ensure compliance throughout the city.

The administration has not announced a general curfew as part of this order. Any change to the restrictions would depend on a subsequent official notification.

Karachi residents should remain aware of the restrictions on public gatherings and check official announcements for any further changes before organising public events.
