Bilawal Bhutto, Rana Sanaullah Appointed to Judicial Commission of Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN — WEB DESK: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Rana Sanaullah have been appointed as members of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP), following the resignations of two previous members.

The appointments were reported on Friday, October 9, with a notification issued following the approval of Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi, who chairs the commission.

Rana Sanaullah also serves as Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs.

Two New Members Replace Resigning Representatives

The appointments follow the resignations of PPP leader Farooq H Naek and PML-N representative Aftab Sheikh.

Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and Rana Sanaullah will take their places in the commission, which plays a central role in Pakistan’s judicial appointment process.

The reported notification marks a change in the commission’s membership rather than an announcement of new judicial appointments.

The reasons behind the two resignations were not specified in the initial report.

What Is the Judicial Commission of Pakistan?

The Judicial Commission of Pakistan is a constitutional body responsible for considering candidates for appointment to the country’s superior courts.

Its responsibilities cover judicial appointments to the Supreme Court, Federal Shariat Court and high courts, subject to the constitutional provisions governing each category.

The commission reviews candidates through procedures established under Pakistan’s constitutional framework.

Its membership includes representatives from the judiciary, parliament, government and legal profession, along with other constitutionally designated members.

Role of the 26th Constitutional Amendment

The commission’s composition was revised under the 26th Constitutional Amendment, adopted in October 2024.

The changes expanded the representation of different institutions in the judicial appointment process.

The revised structure provides for participation by parliamentary and other representatives alongside senior members of the judiciary.

The inclusion of political figures in the commission therefore reflects the constitutional framework governing its membership.

However, appointment to the commission does not give any individual member unilateral authority to appoint or remove judges.

Why the Appointments Matter

The Judicial Commission plays an important role in shaping the composition of Pakistan’s superior judiciary.

Changes in its membership can attract political and legal attention because the commission considers nominations for senior judicial positions.

The inclusion of Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and Rana Sanaullah brings two prominent political figures into the body at a time when judicial governance remains an important national issue.

Their appointments may also draw attention to the balance between judicial independence and parliamentary representation in the appointment process.

Further Details Awaited

The initial report did not provide the full text of the appointment notification or details of the commission’s next scheduled meeting.

It also did not announce any immediate changes to pending judicial nominations.

The development concerns the commission’s membership, not the appointment of new judges or a change in the powers of Pakistan’s courts.
