Sindh to Hold China Investment Conference in Shanghai on October 15
KARACHI, PAKISTAN — WEB DESK: The Sindh government has announced plans to hold an investment conference in Shanghai, China, on October 15, 2026, as part of efforts to attract foreign investment, strengthen economic cooperation and create new employment opportunities in the province.
Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced the initiative during a press conference in Karachi on Thursday, October 8.
Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah is expected to lead a high-level delegation to China, where provincial officials will explore investment opportunities through business-to-business (B2B) and government-to-government (G2G) engagement.
The proposed conference is intended to strengthen commercial links between Sindh and Chinese investors while encouraging partnerships that could support provincial development.
Memon said increased Chinese investment could generate employment opportunities for young Pakistanis and contribute to economic growth.
The government has not yet disclosed the expected investment value, the number of participating companies or any agreements scheduled for signing.
Sindh Highlights Energy and Development Projects
During the briefing, Memon also highlighted the growing contribution of Thar coal to Pakistan’s electricity supply.
He claimed that Thar coal currently accounts for approximately 14% of the country’s electricity generation, presenting the project as an important part of Pakistan’s domestic energy strategy.
The minister said around $1 billion had been invested in Thar coal projects, which he argued had helped reduce pressure on foreign exchange reserves by limiting dependence on imported fuel.
These figures were presented as government claims and require confirmation against current national energy statistics and project investment records.
Memon also outlined education infrastructure initiatives across Sindh.
He said 1,100 new schools were being constructed during the year, with 47 expected to be completed by December and approximately 800 before March.
The minister did not provide a detailed breakdown of project costs or the locations of the schools during the briefing.
Sindh Vision Event Planned for Sukkur
The senior minister separately announced that the third Sindh Vision event would take place in Sukkur in November, following earlier gatherings in Karachi and Islamabad.
Journalists, diplomats and representatives of different sectors are expected to attend, while Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari may also participate.
The event is intended to present the provincial government’s development initiatives and highlight Sukkur’s progress.
Memon also addressed political tensions involving the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), criticising the party’s approach to governance and security challenges in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
His remarks reflected the PPP’s political position and were separate from the investment announcement.
The Shanghai conference will be an opportunity for Sindh to present its investment priorities to Chinese businesses. However, no new investment commitments have yet been confirmed, and the outcome will depend on negotiations and subsequent implementation.
