India supreme court seeks answers over voter list revision

Date:

The court has asked the Indian government and Election Commission to explain decisions linked to a large-scale voter-roll revision facing opposition criticism.

Web Desk: India’s Supreme Court on Monday ordered the government and the country’s election body to explain decisions linked to a large-scale revision of voter rolls that has triggered allegations of wrongdoing from opposition parties.

The court’s intervention comes as pressure mounts on the Election Commission of India (ECI) over changes to electoral rolls and the role of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The Election Commission and India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have rejected allegations that voter-list changes were designed to benefit the government or the BJP.

Opposition raises concerns over voter rolls

Opposition parties have accused the election authorities of removing eligible voters from electoral rolls through recent verification and revision exercises.

The allegations have also triggered street protests in several Indian cities, with demonstrators demanding Kumar’s resignation. The Election Commission has defended the revision process as an effort to remove invalid entries and maintain accurate electoral rolls.

The dispute intensified after reports that two election commissioners had raised concerns about decisions involving voter-list revisions, registration procedures and the commission’s digital systems.

Election Commission rejects allegations

The Election Commission has denied accusations of wrongdoing and said differences within an institution are normal.

Last month, the commission ordered a review of its voter-roll software following reports about concerns raised by election commissioners. It also said local officials would visit voters flagged over discrepancies rather than routinely requiring them to appear at government offices.

The commission’s position is that the verification process is intended to ensure the accuracy and integrity of electoral rolls.

Protests add to political pressure

The court proceedings come amid demonstrations demanding greater accountability from India’s election authorities.

Thousands of opposition supporters and youth activists have protested in Delhi and Mumbai over the voter-roll changes. Protesters allege that the revisions could disenfranchise eligible voters and benefit Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP. The BJP and Election Commission deny those allegations.

Further opposition protests have been planned, including a march towards the Election Commission’s office in New Delhi.

Legal and political significance

The Supreme Court’s request for explanations places the disputed voter-roll decisions under additional judicial scrutiny.

The proceedings are taking place against the backdrop of growing political disagreement over India’s electoral system and the independence of the Election Commission.

The court’s request for explanations does not itself establish that the voter rolls were manipulated. The allegations remain contested, with opposition groups making claims that have been rejected by the election authorities and government.
