Macron Slams Trump’s Gaza Diplomacy as ‘Spectacle of Shame’ at UN
UNITED NATIONS, NEW YORK — WEB DESK: French President Emmanuel Macron used his final address to the United Nations General Assembly before leaving office next year to sharply criticise US President Donald Trump’s portrayal of his Gaza diplomacy, arguing that conditions on the ground did not match claims of peace.
Speaking at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, Macron challenged Trump’s presentation of his Gaza peace initiative as a diplomatic achievement. He pointed to the continued humanitarian crisis in the enclave and said humanitarian corridors had not been reopened despite declarations that peace had been secured.
Macron described the situation as a spectacle that should bring shame, according to Reuters. His comments came hours after Trump addressed the same General Assembly and promoted his Gaza initiative as one of his administration’s foreign-policy achievements.
The French president also turned his attention to the occupied West Bank, arguing that continuing violence and settlement activity there undermined claims that the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict had been resolved. Hamas does not govern the West Bank, a distinction Macron used in challenging explanations that frame the entire conflict around the militant group.
Macron’s criticism came against a backdrop of continuing international concern about conditions facing Palestinians.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the General Assembly that humanitarian assistance must be allowed to flow and warned that violence, displacement and Israeli settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank were threatening prospects for peace. He reiterated support for a two-state solution.
At the same time, Trump’s Gaza initiative continues to receive support from several governments in the region. Foreign ministers from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia issued a joint statement in New York commending Trump’s leadership while calling for stronger US involvement to ensure implementation of commitments under the plan.
The eight countries said Israel should fulfil outstanding commitments under the first phase of the plan, including allowing the immediate, safe and unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance and early-recovery supplies into Gaza.
That regional statement illustrates the differing assessments of Trump’s Gaza diplomacy: while Macron argued that developments on the ground fell short of claims of success, the eight Arab and Islamic governments credited US involvement while pressing Washington to ensure that agreed commitments are implemented.
Macron’s speech carried additional political significance because it was his final UN General Assembly address before his presidential term ends in 2027. France’s constitution prevents him from serving a third consecutive presidential term.
The Gaza crisis remains a central issue at this year’s General Assembly. The UN voted last week to permit the State of Palestine to participate virtually in the high-level debate, approving the measure by 152 votes to three, with four abstentions. The United States and Israel were among the countries voting against the resolution.
Macron’s intervention therefore adds to an increasingly public debate among Western and regional governments over whether diplomatic initiatives have produced sufficient improvements for Palestinians on the ground, particularly in humanitarian access, security and prospects for a lasting political settlement.
