WEB DESK: The United States, Denmark and Greenland have reached an agreement aimed at strengthening US military and security access to Greenland, with President Donald Trump saying the pact gives Washington a permanent role in defending the strategically important Arctic territory.
Trump announced the agreement on Friday, saying the United States would be able to maintain and expand its military presence on Greenland while US adversaries would be prevented from establishing bases or military facilities there.
The agreement falls short of Trump’s previous push for the United States to acquire Greenland, which remains an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.
US military access to Greenland
According to a US State Department official cited by Reuters, the agreement provides the United States with permanent access, basing and overflight rights in Greenland.
The official said the pact would prohibit non-NATO countries from establishing military bases on the island and restrict certain sensitive investments by countries considered US adversaries.
The agreement would reportedly remain in effect even if Greenland eventually becomes independent.
Trump said the arrangement has no expiry date and described it as giving Washington the ability to take necessary measures to protect Greenland and US security interests.
The United States already has extensive military rights in Greenland under a 1951 defence agreement with Denmark and operates Pituffik Space Base in the northwest of the island.
Denmark and Greenland maintain sovereignty
The announcement does not transfer ownership or sovereignty of Greenland to the United States.
Danish and Greenlandic officials have stressed that the agreement respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark as well as Greenland’s right to self-determination.
Denmark’s prime minister’s office said the agreement would strengthen security in the North Atlantic and Arctic regions. Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen also said the arrangement recognised Greenland’s interests and its role in international cooperation.
The agreement is expected to be formally signed next week, according to the Danish prime minister’s office. Further parliamentary procedures may also be required before the arrangement takes effect.
Details of the agreement remain unclear
Several important details have not yet been made public.
It remains unclear whether the agreement will lead to the construction of additional US military bases, how many additional American personnel could be deployed or what specific infrastructure Washington may develop on the island.
Reuters also reported that the agreement would require US approval for certain sensitive investments by countries outside the NATO alliance.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the agreement permanently addresses Washington’s national security concerns regarding Greenland and keeps the territory within North America’s strategic defence area.
Why Greenland matters to the US
Greenland’s location between North America and Europe makes it strategically important to Arctic and North Atlantic security.
The island is home to the US Pituffik Space Base, which supports missile warning, missile defence and space surveillance activities. Its position also gives the United States and its NATO allies a strategic vantage point over the Arctic and North Atlantic.
Trump has repeatedly argued that Greenland is important to US national security and has previously sought greater American control over the territory.
The new agreement provides expanded US security and military access without transferring Greenland’s sovereignty to Washington.
The agreement is expected to move toward formal signing next week, but its final implementation will depend on the details of the pact and the required political and parliamentary procedures.
The extent of any future US military expansion on Greenland also remains unclear.
