SOUTHAMPTON, ENGLAND — WEB DESK: Captain Harry Brook produced a devastating unbeaten century as England overwhelmed Sri Lanka by 119 runs in the opening Twenty20 international at Southampton on Tuesday, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Brook smashed an unbeaten 114 from just 49 deliveries, striking 10 fours and six sixes, as England piled up an imposing 254-4. Former captain Jos Buttler provided major support with 80 from 44 balls.

Brook reached his century from only 42 balls, registering his second T20I hundred. His innings earned him Player of the Match honours.

England’s attacking intent was evident almost immediately. The hosts raced to 90-1 in the six-over powerplay, their second-highest powerplay score in T20 internationals.

Debutant Aneurin Donald contributed a rapid 12 from five balls before being dismissed, after which Buttler and Brook took complete control.

The pair added 128 runs for the second wicket from only 60 deliveries, giving Sri Lanka’s bowlers little opportunity to slow the scoring.

Brook Takes 30 Runs From One Over

One of the defining moments came when Brook attacked Sri Lankan spinner Dunith Wellalage, taking 30 runs from the fifth over.

Brook struck three sixes and three fours during the over as England accelerated dramatically. He reached his half-century from only 20 deliveries before continuing towards his hundred.

Buttler was equally important to England’s total, striking 80 before eventually falling after helping build the decisive partnership.

Will Jacks added 21 during the latter stages as England finished at 254-4, setting Sri Lanka a daunting target of 255.

Sri Lanka Bowled Out for 135

Sri Lanka never seriously threatened the target.

England’s bowlers struck regularly and dismissed the visitors for 135, completing a commanding 119-run victory.

Sonny Baker was the standout bowler, returning excellent figures of 3-12 as Sri Lanka struggled to establish momentum during the chase.

Baker struck twice during the powerplay, removing Kamil Mishara and Lahiru Udara, while Will Jacks accounted for Pathum Nissanka.

Sri Lanka’s Dunith Wellalage offered some resistance with 33 from 21 deliveries, but wickets continued to fall around him. Jamie Overton also claimed two wickets before England completed the rout.

The result extended England’s strong record against Sri Lanka to 13 consecutive T20I victories over the Asian side.

Brook described England’s performance as close to ideal after the match, with the captain’s innings underlining his impressive run in the shortest format.

England now hold a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, with the second T20 international scheduled for Cardiff on Thursday.
