The former England captain will join Brendon McCullum’s coaching setup as the team prepares for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
Web Desk: Former England captain and star batter Kevin Pietersen has been appointed as a specialist mentor to England Men’s white-ball cricket teams ahead of the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed that Pietersen will join head coach Brendon McCullum’s white-ball setup as England prepare for a series of international assignments leading into next year’s World Cup.
The appointment marks Pietersen’s return to England’s national setup for the first time since his international retirement in 2014.
Pietersen to work with England’s white-ball teams
Pietersen will begin his mentoring role during England’s upcoming white-ball series against Sri Lanka.
He is also expected to be involved in England’s white-ball tours of Australia and South Africa this winter before working with the team during home series against Pakistan and New Zealand next summer.
His involvement will continue into the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, which will be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
Part of McCullum’s coaching setup
Pietersen will work alongside McCullum and other members of England’s white-ball coaching staff, including Marcus Trescothick, Tim Southee, Jeetan Patel and Sarah Taylor.
The ECB said Pietersen’s experience at the highest level of international cricket will add valuable knowledge to the setup as England prepare for the next World Cup campaign.
Pietersen welcomes England return
Pietersen said he was proud to have been offered the opportunity to help England pursue another World Cup title.
He also described returning to the England setup after more than a decade as a special moment.
Pietersen represented England for 10 years and played 136 ODIs and 37 T20 internationals, scoring more than 5,500 runs in white-ball cricket. He also scored 8,181 runs in 104 Test matches.
A wealth of international experience
Pietersen was one of England’s most influential batters during his international career and played a key role in the team’s 2010 T20 World Cup triumph.
His experience extends beyond international cricket, with a long career in franchise and domestic T20 competitions around the world.
The ECB’s decision to bring him into the setup reflects a focus on using experienced former players to support England’s preparations for major tournaments.
England eye 2027 World Cup
The 2027 World Cup will be the central target of Pietersen’s new role.
Before the tournament, England will face several major tests, including white-ball assignments in Australia and South Africa and home matches against Pakistan and New Zealand.
Pietersen’s return gives England access to a former international captain and prolific batter who has extensive experience of playing in different conditions and high-pressure tournaments.
His appointment is therefore expected to add another layer of experience to McCullum’s coaching setup as England build towards their next major global title challenge.
