Gold Price in Pakistan Drops Rs2,400 to Rs463,136 Per Tola

KARACHI, PAKISTAN — WEB DESK: Gold prices in Pakistan declined sharply on Monday, September 7, following weakness in the international bullion market, with the price of 24-karat gold falling by Rs2,400 per tola to Rs463,136.

The price of 10 grams of 24-karat gold also decreased by Rs2,058, settling at Rs397,064, according to rates reported from the local bullion market.

The latest decline extends the downward movement seen in Pakistan’s gold market after prices had already fallen substantially in the previous trading session.

International Gold Falls $24 Per Ounce

The domestic decline tracked weaker international bullion prices.

Gold in the international market dropped by $24 per ounce on Monday, bringing the reported local benchmark international rate to $4,406 per ounce.

Separate international market data showed spot gold trading around $4,392.88 an ounce, down approximately 0.8%, as stronger US employment figures increased expectations that the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates at its September meeting.

The difference between international spot quotations and the rate used by Pakistan’s bullion association can reflect timing, premiums and market conventions.

Stronger expectations of higher US interest rates generally put pressure on gold because the precious metal does not pay interest. Rising bond yields can therefore make interest-bearing assets relatively more attractive to investors.

Gold Down Rs6,000 Per Tola in Two Sessions

Monday’s decline follows another significant drop in Pakistan’s bullion market on Saturday.

Gold had fallen Rs3,600 per tola in the previous session to Rs465,536, while 10-gram gold had dropped Rs3,086 to Rs399,122.

With Monday’s additional Rs2,400 decline, gold has now fallen by a combined Rs6,000 per tola across the latest two reported sessions, from Rs469,136 to Rs463,136.

Despite the decline, gold prices remain highly sensitive to developments in international financial markets, US monetary policy expectations, geopolitical tensions and movements in the Pakistani rupee.

Silver Price Also Declines in Pakistan

Silver followed gold lower in Monday’s local market.

The price of silver fell by Rs39 per tola to Rs7,059, while the rate for 10 grams declined by Rs34 to Rs6,051.

This means both major precious metals traded lower in Pakistan during Monday’s session.

Why Are Gold Prices Falling?

International gold came under pressure after stronger US labour-market data increased expectations of tighter monetary policy.

Reuters reported that robust August employment growth and an unemployment rate holding at 4.1% strengthened market expectations of a potential Federal Reserve rate increase. The probability of a rate hike at the upcoming meeting rose to around 58% from 50%, according to CME FedWatch data cited by Reuters.

Investors are now watching upcoming US inflation data for further clues about the Federal Reserve’s next move.

The decline is notable because geopolitical tensions and higher oil prices would normally provide some safe-haven and inflation-hedge support for gold. In the latest session, however, expectations of higher interest rates outweighed those factors.

What Could Move Gold Prices Next?

Pakistan’s gold market will remain exposed to both international and domestic factors.

The most important global drivers include the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate outlook, US inflation data, bond yields, the dollar and geopolitical developments. Locally, movements in the rupee can amplify or offset changes in international bullion prices.

Consumers should also note that association benchmark rates do not necessarily equal the final retail price of jewellery. Actual purchases may include making charges, dealer margins and other costs, depending on the jeweller and product.

With gold losing Rs6,000 per tola across the latest two reported sessions, traders will now be watching whether international bullion stabilises around current levels or extends its decline ahead of the Federal Reserve’s September policy decision.
