Probe recommends action against four police officials and dismissal of the case registered against the affected family.
Web Desk: A Karachi police inquiry has held Korangi Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Fida Janwari responsible for administrative negligence in connection with an alleged assault involving a family in Defence Housing Authority (DHA).
The inquiry committee has completed its investigation, while the report has been forwarded to Additional Inspector General (AIG) for further action, South Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Asad Raza said.
The findings come after CCTV footage of the incident in DHA’s Khayaban-e-Bukhari went viral on social media, raising questions about the conduct of police officers present at the scene.
Inquiry recommends action against police officials
According to sources cited in the inquiry report, action has been recommended against SSP Fida Janwari over alleged administrative negligence in handling the matter.
The report also recommends legal action against four Korangi district police officials. Those named in the report include Darakhshan SHO Rashid Ali, SIU officer Imran and police mobile officer Aftab.
DIG South Asad Raza said a transparent investigation had been conducted and confirmed that the report had been sent to the additional inspector general.
He said action would be taken against those found responsible in accordance with the law.
Case against affected family recommended for dismissal
A key recommendation of the inquiry is the dismissal of the case registered against the affected family under B-class.
The report also recommends registration of a case based on the complaint of the family, according to sources.
The inquiry further recommended cases against two women and a man seen allegedly assaulting the family in video footage. These recommendations remain subject to further legal and departmental action.
What happened in the Defence assault case?
The incident took place outside an apartment in DHA’s Khayaban-e-Bukhari.
According to the inquiry findings reported by Geo News, a woman identified as Noor ul Ain and her brother were allegedly assaulted by a woman using a dumbbell.
Video footage that circulated online showed a woman striking Noor with a dumbbell. When Noor resisted, police officers appeared to restrain her and her companion rather than the woman allegedly carrying out the assault.
The footage also showed a person in plain clothes taking an official police weapon and allegedly using it to smash a CCTV camera.
The incident triggered questions over the police response and whether proper procedure had been followed.
Sindh High Court orders protection
The Sindh High Court (SHC) has also ordered police to provide protection to the affected family.
The family had challenged the FIR registered against them and sought legal action concerning the alleged assault.
The inquiry follows an earlier decision by Karachi police authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and the conduct of officers seen in the footage. Police had previously said the officers visible in the video were believed to belong to the Korangi district.
