US Mint Releases $1 Coin Featuring Trump for America’s 250th Anniversary

WASHINGTON, UNITED STATES — WEB DESK: The United States Mint has released special $1 coins featuring President Donald Trump’s portrait as part of celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of American independence, placing the image of a sitting president on US legal tender and renewing debate over federal restrictions governing depictions of living people on currency.

The 2026 Semiquincentennial President Donald J. Trump $1 Coin went on sale on September 2, with the Mint offering a 25-coin roll for $61 and a bag containing 100 coins for $154.50. Both contain circulating-quality coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint.

What the Trump $1 Coin Looks Like

The obverse, or heads side, carries a portrait of Trump accompanied by the inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “1776 ~ 2026.”

The portrait was designed by US Mint Chief Engraver Joseph Menna and was inspired by an official White House photograph taken by Daniel Torok.

The reverse carries the Presidential Seal, featuring an eagle holding an olive branch and arrows. The shield includes the number 250, marking the US Semiquincentennial, alongside the denomination “ONE DOLLAR.”

Despite its gold appearance, the coin is not made of gold. According to official Mint specifications, it consists of 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese and 2% nickel, weighs 8.10 grams and has a circulating finish.

Special July 4 Coins Mixed Into Rolls and Bags

The Mint produced 250,000 special versions on July 4, 2026, carrying a distinctive “July 4th” privy mark to commemorate the anniversary.

Those coins are being randomly mixed into the rolls and bags sold to collectors, making them potentially more sought-after than the standard version.

The Mint initially imposed a limit of two orders per household for each product during the first 24 hours of sales. Its product listing gives limits of 150,000 rolls and 50,000 bags, while listing no overall mintage limit for the coin itself.

Coin Revives Debate Over Living Presidents on Currency

Trump’s appearance on the coin has generated unusual legal and historical debate.

US federal law contains restrictions intended to prevent living presidents from being depicted on certain US currency and coin programmes. The new Trump coin, however, was authorised by the Treasury under legislation providing special authority for redesigned $1 coins marking the country’s 250th anniversary. The coin has been issued as legal tender despite continuing debate over how different federal provisions interact.

For that reason, saying simply that US law “does not allow any living person to appear on American currency” — as suggested by the source report — is too categorical.

The legal framework is more complicated, involving different statutes governing particular coins, presidential depictions and the Treasury secretary’s authority for the 2026 anniversary programme.

Trump Is Not the First Sitting President on a US Coin

The release is highly unusual, but it is not completely unprecedented.

In 1926, then-President Calvin Coolidge appeared alongside George Washington on a commemorative half-dollar marking the 150th anniversary of American independence. Coolidge was still serving as president at the time.

The historical comparison means claims that Trump is the first-ever living or sitting US president depicted on an American coin would be inaccurate.

He is, however, the first sitting president in roughly a century to appear in this way, making the 2026 issue an exceptional event in modern US coinage.

Collectible Coin Is Also Legal Tender

Another important distinction concerns the word “commemorative.”

The Trump coin is being marketed through Mint rolls and bags as a special anniversary product, but it is also a $1 legal-tender coin with a circulating finish. The Mint says the coin is intended for circulation as well as collector sales.

That means it should not be described merely as a medal, souvenir token or privately issued Trump product.

It is an official US Mint coin.

The collector packages nevertheless cost substantially more than their face value. A roll with $25 in face-value coins costs $61, while $100 in coins costs $154.50.

Part of America’s 250th Anniversary Programme

The issue forms part of a wider US Mint programme celebrating 250 years since the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

The anniversary, officially known as the Semiquincentennial, has prompted special coin designs and other commemorative programmes across the federal government.

The Mint officially unveiled the Trump coin designs on August 4, before announcing that rolls and bags would go on sale September 2.

The central verified development is therefore that the US government has now issued an official 2026 $1 legal-tender coin bearing Trump’s portrait, an extraordinary but not entirely unprecedented use of a sitting president’s image in American coinage.
