Shailene Woodley Reveals Why Her Mary Jane Role Was Cut From ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’

LOS ANGELES, UNITED STATES — WEB DESK: Shailene Woodley has revisited one of the most intriguing “what if” moments in modern superhero cinema, revealing how she filmed scenes as Mary Jane Watson for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 only to learn later that her entire role had been removed from the finished movie.

Speaking during a recent SAG-AFTRA Foundation Conversations appearance, Woodley recalled being thrilled when she was cast as Mary Jane, saying Spider-Man had been her favourite superhero and Mary Jane her favourite character while growing up.

The actress confirmed she filmed three scenes with Andrew Garfield, who played Peter Parker in the franchise, before receiving unexpected news roughly a year later: she was no longer going to appear in the movie.

Why Was Shailene Woodley Cut From Spider-Man?

According to Woodley, filmmakers explained that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was already introducing numerous characters and that they wanted to concentrate on the relationship between Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy, played by Garfield and Emma Stone respectively, before bringing Mary Jane into the story.

That account is consistent with explanations given by director Marc Webb when the film was released in 2014.

Webb said at the time that introducing Mary Jane risked distracting from the emotional importance of Peter and Gwen’s relationship. He explained that Woodley’s scenes did not feel right alongside the central romance and were therefore removed during the editing process.

The decision was therefore a storytelling and editing choice, rather than evidence that Woodley had been fired because of her performance.

Woodley Jokes About Her Performance

Looking back on the experience, Woodley jokingly offered another possibility — perhaps, she suggested, her performance simply had not been good enough.

Her comment was made humorously, however, and should not be interpreted as the actual reason for her removal.

Contemporary statements from Webb directly contradict that interpretation. When Woodley’s removal became public in 2013, the director praised her as a talented actress and said he had made a creative decision to streamline the movie and focus on Peter and Gwen.

Producer Matt Tolmach later offered a similar explanation, saying the filmmakers had packed a great deal into the sequel and that Mary Jane’s presence became a distraction from the larger story they were trying to tell.

What Were Mary Jane’s Deleted Scenes?

Woodley’s role was relatively small but was intended to establish Mary Jane before she became more important to Peter Parker’s story.

Webb previously revealed that one scene would have introduced Mary Jane as a neighbour, while another involved an interaction between Gwen and MJ.

The filmmakers ultimately concluded that even this limited introduction complicated the Peter-Gwen storyline.

The plan was instead to delay Mary Jane’s introduction until a subsequent movie. Woodley herself said in 2013 that although she was disappointed, she understood the decision to hold the character back for the next instalment.

Why Woodley Never Returned as Mary Jane

That planned return never happened.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was released in 2014 with Garfield as Peter Parker, Stone as Gwen Stacy and a large supporting cast, but without Woodley’s Mary Jane.

Although Sony initially had plans to continue the franchise, the proposed The Amazing Spider-Man 3 starring Garfield was ultimately not produced. As a result, the intended opportunity to introduce Mary Jane in a later instalment disappeared as well.

There had also been uncertainty about whether Woodley herself would return. Webb acknowledged in 2014 that her increasingly busy schedule following the success of Divergent could have made a future appearance difficult.

A Spider-Man Mystery Finally Revisited

Woodley’s latest comments do not completely rewrite the history of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Instead, they provide her personal recollection of a decision that Webb and other filmmakers had discussed publicly more than a decade ago.

What they make particularly clear is that Woodley did play Mary Jane and did film scenes opposite Garfield — her appearance simply never survived the final edit.

For Spider-Man fans, the deleted performance remains an intriguing glimpse at a version of Garfield’s franchise that could have developed very differently had its planned sequels moved forward.
