US Approves Potential $125 Million Missile Sale to South Korea

WASHINGTON, UNITED STATES — WEB DESK: The US State Department has approved a potential $125 million Foreign Military Sale to South Korea involving AIM-9X Sidewinder air-to-air missiles and related equipment, as Washington and Seoul continue efforts to strengthen their longstanding security alliance.

The proposed sale was approved by the State Department, while the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress of the possible transaction.

According to reporting on the proposed package, South Korea requested 103 AIM-9X Sidewinder Block II missiles along with 10 tactical guidance units and associated equipment.

The package is also expected to include logistical, technical and programme support required to operate and maintain the missile system.

The AIM-9X is an advanced version of the Sidewinder family of short-range, infrared-guided air-to-air missiles and is designed primarily for use by fighter aircraft against airborne targets.

Its modern seeker and guidance technology gives pilots the ability to engage highly manoeuvrable aerial targets, including at angles away from the aircraft’s immediate flight path.

The proposed transaction is intended to improve South Korea’s ability to respond to current and future security threats while strengthening interoperability with US forces and other allied systems.

Sale Still Requires Further US Process

The State Department’s approval does not mean that the $125 million transaction has been completed.

Foreign Military Sales typically proceed through congressional notification and review before contracts and final terms are concluded. The eventual value of a sale can also differ from the maximum amount initially notified, depending on final requirements and agreements.

The proposed package therefore should be described as a potential arms sale, rather than weapons already purchased and delivered to South Korea.

The development comes as Washington and Seoul maintain close military cooperation amid persistent security concerns on the Korean Peninsula.

The United States maintains a significant military presence in South Korea under their decades-old alliance, while the two countries regularly conduct joint military exercises.

North Korea has repeatedly criticised US-South Korean exercises, portraying them as preparations for conflict. Washington and Seoul maintain that their military cooperation and exercises are defensive.

AIM-9X Strengthens Short-Range Air Combat Capability

The AIM-9X is one of the most widely recognised modern short-range air-to-air missile systems used by the United States and allied air forces.

The latest variants incorporate improved infrared targeting, manoeuvrability and guidance capabilities compared with earlier generations of the Sidewinder.

For South Korea, additional AIM-9X missiles would supplement the weapons available to its fighter fleet and support its ability to conduct air-defence missions.

South Korea operates a mix of advanced combat aircraft, including US-built F-35A stealth fighters and F-15K and KF-16 aircraft, alongside its domestically developed KF-21 programme.

The latest proposed sale comes amid broader efforts by Seoul to modernise its armed forces in response to North Korea’s expanding missile and nuclear capabilities and changing security conditions across the Indo-Pacific.

Washington has repeatedly described South Korea as one of its key treaty allies in Asia, while both governments have sought deeper military interoperability and stronger deterrence on the Korean Peninsula.

If the transaction completes the required US process, the missile package would become another component of that wider defence relationship.
