JAKARTA, INDONESIA — WEB DESK: The death toll from a magnitude 7.7 earthquake near Indonesia’s Flores Island has risen to 47, according to the latest figures provided in the supplied report, with more than 2,000 people displaced after buildings and homes were damaged or destroyed.

The powerful earthquake struck early Saturday near the Indonesian island of Flores, triggering a tsunami warning that was later lifted.

Death toll rises as rescue operations continue

The earthquake caused casualties in several incidents and damaged infrastructure across affected areas.

According to the report, 50 people were injured, while several buildings collapsed during the earthquake.

More than 50 houses were reportedly destroyed, while a number of other properties sustained varying degrees of damage.

Emergency and rescue teams have been deployed to affected communities as authorities continue assessing the scale of destruction.

More than 2,000 people displaced

The disaster has forced more than 2,000 residents from their homes, with authorities working to provide assistance to affected communities.

The number of displaced people could increase as assessments continue and damaged buildings are inspected for safety.

Officials have also warned that the death toll could rise as rescue workers reach areas that may have been difficult to access.

Tsunami warning lifted

The earthquake initially prompted a tsunami warning for potentially affected coastal areas.

The warning was subsequently withdrawn after authorities determined that the immediate tsunami threat had passed.

Residents in affected areas were nevertheless urged to remain alert and follow instructions issued by emergency authorities.

Rescue and assessment operations underway

Rescue personnel are continuing operations in affected locations, searching damaged structures and providing assistance to injured and displaced residents.

Authorities are also assessing damage to homes and other buildings while working to establish the full impact of the earthquake.

The latest disaster adds to Indonesia’s long history of exposure to major earthquakes because of its location along the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire.

Death toll may increase

With rescue and assessment operations still underway, authorities have warned that the number of casualties could rise.

Officials are expected to provide further updates as emergency teams reach more affected communities and verify reports of casualties and structural damage.

The focus remains on rescuing survivors, treating the injured and providing shelter and essential assistance to those displaced by the earthquake.
