KARACHI, PAKISTAN — WEB DESK: Residents of Karachi will have to pay higher water and sewerage charges after the Sindh government formally approved a 7.05% increase in Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) tariffs for the 2026-27 financial year.
The revised tariff has been made effective retrospectively from July 1, 2026, according to a notification published in the Sindh Government Gazette on August 10. The increase covers both retail and bulk consumers.
The revised rates were approved by the KW&SC Board and subsequently incorporated into the official gazette. The adjustment is based on the average Consumer Price Index (CPI).
Residential and commercial consumers affected
Under the revised tariff structure, monthly water and sewerage charges for residential properties will be calculated according to plot size.
The new schedule also introduces fixed monthly charges for various commercial categories, including shops, business centres and other commercial establishments.
The increase therefore affects a broad range of KWSC consumers across Karachi, with the exact impact depending on the applicable property or commercial category.
KWSC cites financial sustainability
KWSC has linked the tariff revision to efforts to strengthen its revenue base and improve its financial capacity.
The corporation says additional resources are required to maintain and rehabilitate Karachi’s ageing water supply and sewerage infrastructure while meeting the needs of the city’s growing population.
The official KWSC website lists revenue, customer services and governance, along with infrastructure rehabilitation and sewerage management, among its core operational areas.
Increase comes amid continuing water challenges
The tariff increase comes as Karachi continues to face longstanding challenges involving water availability, sewerage infrastructure and the maintenance of ageing civic systems.
The latest increase is also the second major adjustment in KWSC charges in two years. The corporation had raised monthly charges by around 23% in September 2024, according to Geo News.
The revised 2026-27 tariff is intended to provide KWSC with additional financial resources for operating, maintaining, repairing and rehabilitating the city’s water and sewerage systems.
For Karachi consumers, however, the higher charges are likely to increase household and business utility expenses at a time when reliable water supply and sewerage services remain major civic concerns.
