Debate over Lionel Messi’s international future has intensified after Argentina’s World Cup final defeat to Spain, with a possible farewell match now under consideration.
Buenos Aires, Argentina – Web Desk: Speculation over Lionel Messi’s international future has resurfaced after Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the final of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The 39-year-old delivered standout performances throughout the tournament, scoring eight goals and providing four assists to finish as the event’s second-highest scorer. However, reports about his possible retirement from international football have gained momentum following the final defeat.
According to Argentine media reports, Messi may remain with the national team for the next few months to help ease the transition of responsibilities to a new generation of players, but he does not intend to feature at the next World Cup.
There are also reports that the Argentine Football Association is considering organizing a special farewell match in his honour.
Meanwhile, former Argentina star Angel Di Maria has urged Messi to delay his retirement decision, saying that age should not be used as the measure of Messi’s future since he remains among the best players in the world today.
Midfielder Leandro Paredes also expressed hope that Messi would continue playing for the national team, though he acknowledged that the final decision rests with Messi himself.
No official statement confirming Messi’s retirement or a scheduled farewell match has been issued so far by either Messi or the Argentine Football Association.
