Iran’s military says its naval forces intercepted and turned back six vessels attempting to use an unauthorized route through the Strait of Hormuz.
Tehran, Iran – Web Desk: Iran’s military has claimed that its naval forces intercepted and turned back six commercial ships that attempted to pass through the Strait of Hormuz via an unauthorized route.
According to Iranian state television, the action took place overnight after six commercial vessels reportedly tried to use an alternative passage instead of the designated maritime route set by Iranian authorities.
A state TV correspondent said the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) navy first issued warnings to the ships, followed by warning shots fired to stop them. All six vessels were subsequently forced to turn back, according to the report.
Iranian media had earlier also referenced a separate incident involving one vessel, though the nature of that incident or further details were not disclosed.
Separately, an IRGC spokesperson said the Strait of Hormuz had proven to be an effective defensive and strategic asset for Iran during the recent conflict with the United States, describing the waterway as having played a significant role in Iran’s overall defense strategy.
The spokesperson said that during what was described as “Operation Nasr-2,” Iran had caused serious damage to US military bases in the region, and that Iranian strikes had also affected enemy radar systems, significantly reducing the operational capability of American forces. The IRGC further claimed that attacks on US military infrastructure had limited the operational capacity of American forces in the region.
The statement also referenced an alleged recent attack by Ukraine on an Iranian commercial vessel. The spokesperson said Iran would not overlook the incident and that an appropriate response would be given.
These claims by Iranian officials have not been independently verified by outside sources, and there has been no immediate response from US officials to the statements.
