Crude Oil Falls Below $100 as US-Iran Ceasefire Signals Emerge

Date:

Global crude oil prices dropped sharply after signs of easing tension between the United States and Iran raised hopes of a return to diplomacy.

Islamabad, Pakistan – Web Desk: Global crude oil prices dropped sharply below the $100-a-barrel mark after fresh signals of easing tension between the United States and Iran boosted investor confidence in a possible return to diplomatic talks.

According to Reuters, the decline followed a decision by US President Donald Trump to temporarily halt further military strikes against Iran, a move that raised expectations among investors that the ongoing standoff could shift back toward negotiations rather than continued escalation.

In global trading, Brent crude fell by 5.8 percent to settle at $91.20 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude dropped 5.5 percent to trade at $84.40 per barrel, marking one of the sharper single-session declines in recent weeks.

The pullback comes after a period of sustained gains driven by fears of a wider regional conflict. Reuters reported that rising tensions last week had pushed crude prices above the $100-per-barrel threshold, as markets priced in the risk of supply disruptions from an escalating US-Iran confrontation.

However, following the announcement of a pause in US strikes, market concerns over an imminent widening of the conflict eased considerably, prompting investors to unwind some of the risk premium that had been built into oil prices in recent sessions.

Analysts tracking energy markets often note that crude prices tend to react swiftly to geopolitical developments in the Middle East, given the region’s role in global oil supply chains, though sustained price direction typically depends on whether diplomatic efforts translate into a lasting de-escalation.

No further details on the duration of the pause in strikes or the prospects for renewed talks between Washington and Tehran have been confirmed so far. Markets are expected to remain sensitive to any further developments in the coming days as investors watch for signs of a durable de-escalation.
