Pakistan Seeks Alternative Oil Sources Amid Hormuz Shipping Disruptions

Date:

Pakistan has begun exploring alternative crude oil import sources following reports of disruptions to key regional shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, raising fresh concerns over the country’s energy security.

Islamabad, Pakistan – Web Desk: The move comes after reports of the alleged closure of the Strait of Hormuz and an announcement by the Houthis restricting the movement of Saudi oil shipments from the Yanbu port through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

In response to the evolving regional security situation, Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik convened an emergency meeting with the chief executive officers (CEOs) and managing directors (MDs) of Pakistan’s major oil refineries.

Officials briefed the meeting on the potential impact of escalating tensions involving the United States, Iran and the Houthis, warning that prolonged disruption to major shipping lanes could affect global oil supplies and Pakistan’s energy imports.

The petroleum minister directed refinery officials to immediately identify alternative crude oil suppliers to ensure an uninterrupted supply of petroleum products and safeguard the country’s energy needs.

Senior officials attending the meeting said refineries have already initiated discussions with international trading companies to assess the availability of crude oil from alternative markets, including the United States, Singapore, Nigeria and Central Asian countries.

Pakistan relies heavily on imported crude oil, and any prolonged disruption in regional maritime routes could increase import costs, place pressure on domestic fuel supplies and affect the broader economy.

Authorities said efforts are focused on diversifying import sources to reduce risks associated with geopolitical instability in the Gulf region.
