US Sets Conditions for Iran Relations: Abandon Nuclear Program, Vance Says

Date:

Zurich/Washington – Web Desk: US Vice President JD Vance has set clear conditions for the restoration of relations with Iran, stating that Washington is ready to build “new and better ties” with Tehran if it changes its policies, abandons its nuclear program, and ceases destabilizing activities in the region .

Speaking on the sidelines of the US-Iran negotiations in Switzerland, Vance emphasized that Washington seeks to bring positive change to the Middle East through diplomacy and envisions a future where all countries in the region can move forward in peace, stability, and prosperity .

“The time has come for both countries to move forward,” Vance said, adding that Iran’s nuclear program would be at the center of the final agreement and that a final deal “must include a full dismantlement of Iran’s nuclear infrastructure” .

Praise for Pakistan’s Role

Vance also praised Pakistan’s role in facilitating the talks, particularly commending Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir for their diplomatic and strategic contributions, which helped advance the negotiation process .

Context

The negotiations in Switzerland marked the first high-level round of talks following the electronic signing of the “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.” The parties have agreed on a roadmap to reach a final agreement within 60 days and have established a High-Level Committee for political oversight .

Vance’s comments come as technical-level negotiations continue in Switzerland and as both sides work toward addressing core issues, including Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions relief, and the implementation of the Lebanon de-confliction cell .
