Islamabad, Pakistan – Web Desk: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday announced a significant reduction in petrol prices, saying the government would provide much-needed relief to the public following easing global oil prices after the US-Iran peace agreement.
Addressing the National Assembly session, the prime minister said Pakistan had earned international recognition through its diplomatic efforts and emphasized that the country played a constructive role in promoting regional and global peace.
Shehbaz Sharif said he had no desire to claim personal credit for the breakthrough agreement between the United States and Iran, adding that the most crucial role was played by Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, who worked tirelessly during the negotiations.
“Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir spent several sleepless months working for peace. His dedication, sincerity, and relentless efforts contributed significantly to this diplomatic success,” the premier told lawmakers.
The prime minister also acknowledged the contributions of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, praising their active diplomatic engagement throughout the process.
During his speech, Shehbaz Sharif revealed that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian had called him and personally thanked Pakistan for its efforts. According to the premier, the Iranian president also specifically appreciated the role of Field Marshal Asim Munir.
The prime minister said he had invited President Pezeshkian to visit Pakistan, adding that Iran had accepted the invitation and promised to undertake the visit at the earliest opportunity.
Referring to the economic impact of the agreement, Shehbaz Sharif noted that global oil prices had already started declining following the ceasefire and expressed hope for further reductions. He said the government had worked hard to shield citizens from inflationary pressures and economic uncertainty.
“Today is a blessed Friday, and I am pleased to announce a substantial reduction in petrol prices,” he said, while thanking the petroleum ministry, finance ministry, and provincial governments for their cooperation.
The premier also credited the leadership of US President Donald Trump, along with the diplomatic support of Qatar, China, Türkiye, and Saudi Arabia in facilitating the peace process.
Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai welcomed national unity on matters of national interest, stating that Pakistan’s military, parliament, and national interests belong to all citizens. However, he urged the government to strengthen parliamentary authority and democratic institutions.
The National Assembly later unanimously passed a resolution congratulating Pakistan’s leadership and diplomatic team for their role in facilitating the historic peace agreement between the United States and Iran.
The resolution praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, and all officials involved in the negotiations. It stated that Pakistan had emerged as a credible and neutral mediator on the global stage through its sincere diplomatic efforts.
Lawmakers described the agreement as a major milestone for regional stability, global energy security, and international peace.
