TEHRAN – Web Desk: Iran has claimed that its advanced air defense system shot down a US MQ-9 Reaper drone in southern Iran, releasing video of the incident, according to Iranian officials.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated that the American drone was attempting to approach the combat zone from the northern part of the Persian Gulf and was targeted and destroyed by Iranian air defense units. The drone was shot down near the city of Jam in Bushehr province, Iranian officials said, adding that the operation was carried out during ongoing tensions near the Strait of Hormuz.
The US military has not yet independently verified or denied the claim. However, US Central Command (CENTCOM) has recently confirmed operations against Iran and military activities near the Strait of Hormuz. The MQ-9 Reaper is an advanced drone used by the US Air Force and intelligence agencies for surveillance, reconnaissance, and targeted strikes. The reported downing is seen as significant amid rising tensions in the region.
