JERUSALEM – Web Desk: Global outrage is mounting following allegations of torture and sexual assault by Israeli forces against volunteers of the Gaza aid flotilla who were detained in international waters this week, according to international media reports.
Organizers of the flotilla claim that at least 15 detainees have filed complaints of sexual assault and rape, while several volunteers suffered broken bones from rubber bullets fired at close range. Italian economist Luca Poggi, who was held by Israeli forces, told media upon arriving in Rome that he was forced to undress, thrown to the ground, kicked, and some individuals were subjected to taser guns.
French organizer Sabrina Shark reported that five French volunteers transferred to Turkey were hospitalized, with some suffering fractured ribs and spine injuries, while others filed detailed complaints of sexual violence. Germany has confirmed that some of its citizens were injured, describing the allegations as extremely serious, with German officials demanding a full explanation from Israel.
Prosecutors in Italy have opened an investigation into possible crimes of alleged abduction, torture, and sexual assault. Spanish Foreign Minister said 44 Spanish activists are returning via Turkey, four of whom required medical attention. Meanwhile, the Israel Prison Service has rejected all these allegations as baseless, stating that all detainees were treated according to law and with respect for basic human rights.
The Israeli navy had intercepted a 50-boat aid convoy in international waters on Tuesday, detaining 430 volunteers carrying humanitarian supplies to Gaza.
