Washington, United States – Web Desk: U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the conflict with Iran could continue beyond the legal deadline, stressing that the decision on when the war ends ultimately rests with the White House.
Speaking before the Senate Armed Services Committee, Hegseth said the timeline for ending the war and seeking congressional authorization would be determined by the administration.
He noted that pauses in military operations could effectively reset the 60-day legal limit under U.S. law, which typically requires either ending hostilities or obtaining approval from Congress.
Meanwhile, efforts by Democrats to limit President Donald Trump’s authority over the Iran conflict faced another setback in the Senate.
A resolution introduced by Senator Adam Schiff aimed at directing the withdrawal of U.S. forces after the Iran war was rejected by a vote of 50 to 47.
The development underscores ongoing political divisions in Washington over war powers, congressional oversight, and the future course of U.S. military engagement in the Middle East.
