Karachi, Pakistan – Web Desk: Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has decided to provide cheap electricity to underserved areas and industrial zones in Karachi, ordering a joint study with K-Electric to develop a targeted subsidy program.
The decision was announced during a meeting at the Chief Minister’s House with K-Electric Chairman Shariyar Chishti. The meeting was attended by K-Electric CEO Syed Taha, PSCM Agha Wasif, Energy Secretary Shoaib Ansari, and other officials.
The chief minister instructed the energy department and K-Electric to conduct a joint study on a targeted subsidy program for electricity consumers in Karachi.
He also directed the preparation of proposals to provide cheaper electricity to low-income areas and industrial zones. With the onset of summer, he emphasized the need to reduce load-shedding in underserved neighborhoods.
CM Shah expressed concern over prolonged power outages in marginalized areas, stating that the start of summer has increased hardships for poor communities. He called for practical solutions to reduce load-shedding, especially in low-income localities.
The chief minister further directed that a study be conducted on a targeted subsidy program for Karachi’s electricity consumers to provide relief to deserving households.
The move comes as Karachi faces rising temperatures and increasing complaints of unannounced load-shedding ahead of the summer months. Industrialists have also demanded cheaper power to remain competitive.
No timeline for implementation of the subsidy program was announced. A K-Electric spokesperson said the company would cooperate fully with the government’s study.
