Countries Tighten Enforcement of Free Speech and Cyber Laws

Date:

Global Desk – Web Desk : Governments around the world are increasingly strengthening enforcement of laws related to freedom of expression, particularly in response to the growing influence of social media.

Experts note that countries facing security threats or conflict situations often adopt stricter policies to curb fake news, misinformation, and propaganda that could undermine national stability.

According to reports cited by BBC, the United Arab Emirates has issued public warnings against sharing unverified information online. Authorities have also banned the posting of images or videos showing missile strikes, drones, or damage caused by such attacks.

Violators may face up to two years in prison, according to officials. During recent regional tensions, authorities in Dubai reportedly arrested around 20 individuals, including a British national, for allegedly recording and sharing missile-related footage.

In an interview with the BBC, Lana Nusseibeh, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, said the country’s cybercrime laws are designed to protect the public, and strict enforcement is necessary during sensitive periods.

She added that social media regulations have been violated multiple times in the past and stressed that people should rely only on credible and verified sources for information.

Experts also point out that in Pakistan, Article 19 of the Constitution of Pakistan clearly defines the limits of freedom of expression. While citizens have the right to express their views, the law restricts speech that may threaten national security, public order, or the defense of the state.

Analysts say that, like many other countries, Pakistan must ensure effective enforcement of cyber laws to address misinformation and maintain national security in the digital era.
