India’s Contradictory Stance on Strait of Hormuz Oil Transit

Date:

Islamabad, Pakistan – Web Desk : Amid rising tensions in the Middle East, India’s stance on oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz has drawn scrutiny, exposing contradictions in its diplomatic approach.

According to Reuters, during recent talks between Indian and Iranian foreign ministers, both sides criticized the US military actions in Iran, with Iranian officials highlighting the role of US policies in escalating regional tensions and risks.

During these discussions, Indian officials claimed that Iran had permitted Indian oil tankers to pass through the strategic Strait of Hormuz. However, an Iranian external source has not confirmed any formal agreement, leaving the matter ambiguous and casting doubt on India’s diplomatic narrative.

Experts note India’s dual approach: on one hand aligning with the US and Israel, while on the other hand seemingly supporting Iran’s anti-US rhetoric for its own economic and strategic interests. Historically, under US pressure, India has previously withdrawn its firms from Chabahar port projects, highlighting its careful balancing act in the region.

Analysts say India’s reliance on Iran’s permission for transit through an international waterway raises questions about the sovereignty and consistency of its foreign policy, underscoring the complexities of its evolving regional strategy.
