Brussels, Belgium – Web Desk: The European Union has voiced full support for Spain after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened trade and economic measures against Madrid over its refusal to provide military bases for operations against Iran.
According to international media reports, European Council President António Costa held a telephone conversation with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, assuring him of the EU’s full backing. Costa said the European bloc would safeguard the interests of its member states and reaffirmed its commitment to international law and a rules-based global order.
The dispute follows Spain’s decision to deny U.S. requests for logistical and military cooperation, including the use of Spanish territory and bases for potential strikes on Iran. President Trump had warned that Washington could sever trade ties if Spain did not grant access.
The development adds strain to U.S.-EU relations at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
