Moon to Align Directly Above Kaaba Tonight

Date:

Mecca, Saudi Arabia – Web Desk: A rare astronomical event will take place on Saturday night, February 28, 2026, when the Moon will align directly above the Kaaba in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

According to the Jeddah Astronomical Society, the Moon will cross the local meridian at 10:24:40 p.m. local time, reaching an altitude of nearly 90 degrees — placing it directly above the Kaaba at its highest point in the sky.

Astronomers describe the phenomenon as a “zenith alignment,” which occurs when the Moon’s declination matches the latitude of a specific location. During this moment, observers anywhere in the world can determine the precise direction of the Qibla by simply facing the Moon.

Experts say the Moon will be approximately 374,000 kilometers from Earth and illuminated at 91%, appearing nearly full. The spectacle will be more clearly visible through telescopes, though it may also be observed with the naked eye from dark locations.

The event offers a unique opportunity for Muslims worldwide to verify Qibla direction using a natural celestial marker.
