Geneva — Web Desk: A second round of key negotiations between the United States and Iran over Tehran’s nuclear programme is set to begin on Tuesday in Geneva, amid heightened tensions in the Middle East.
The talks will be held at the Omani Embassy and are being closely watched due to rising military and political strains in the region. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will engage in indirect discussions with US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, a senior US presidential adviser, through Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad, according to Iranian officials.
The United States is seeking to broaden the scope of the negotiations to include Iran’s missile programme and other non-nuclear issues. Tehran, however, has maintained that it will only discuss sanctions relief in exchange for restrictions on its nuclear programme and has rejected any proposal for zero uranium enrichment.
A day before the talks, Araghchi met International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi to discuss technical matters with nuclear experts, Iranian media reported.
Analysts say the negotiations are taking place at a critical moment, as military preparations and fears of a broader conflict have increased in the region, adding urgency to the diplomatic effort.
