Dhaka, Bangladesh – Web Desk: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Tarique Rahman met Jamaat-e-Islami chief Dr Shafiqur Rahman at his residence following the party’s victory in the recent parliamentary elections, according to a statement released after the meeting.
Dr Shafiqur Rahman congratulated Tarique Rahman in advance as a future prime minister and described his return to national politics as a significant moment for Bangladesh. He said Jamaat-e-Islami envisions a sovereign Bangladesh founded on justice, accountability, and the rule of law.
According to the statement, Tarique Rahman assured that effective measures would be taken to prevent post-election violence and attacks against opposition supporters and minority communities. He said no citizen should feel insecure or live in fear.
Dr Shafiqur Rahman said Jamaat-e-Islami would cooperate with the elected government on matters of national interest, while continuing to perform its constitutional role as an opposition party.
Official results from the Election Commission show the BNP secured 209 of the 299 parliamentary seats, emerging as the largest party, while Jamaat-e-Islami won 68 seats to become the second-largest political force. The National Citizens Party (NCP), a student-led group, won six seats.
The meeting has been viewed by analysts as an early signal of possible political coordination between major opposition-aligned forces, amid concerns over political stability, minority rights, and post-election security in Bangladesh.
