Pakistan Bar Council Delays Karachi Bar Elections Indefinitely

Date:

Karachi: (Web Desk) – The Pakistan Bar Council has indefinitely postponed the Karachi Bar Association elections that were scheduled to take place on February 14, citing concerns over transparency and procedural compliance.

The decision came after an appeal filed by Advocate Mumtaz Khan Tanoli, who argued that the election board constituted under the Sindh Bar Council had failed to properly verify voter lists. According to the Pakistan Bar Council, proceeding with elections without completing the verification process could compromise the integrity and fairness of the electoral exercise.

In its directive, the council emphasized that elections cannot be conducted unless all procedures outlined in the Sindh Bar Council’s own regulations are fully implemented. The regulatory body stressed that ensuring transparency and adherence to established legal frameworks is essential for maintaining confidence among members of the legal community.

The Pakistan Bar Council further ordered that the Sindh Bar Council refrain from holding the annual Karachi Bar Association elections until further notice. It also directed the Secretary of the Sindh Bar Council to submit verified voter lists along with ballot-related material for review.

Meanwhile, the administrative committee previously established by the Sindh Bar Council will continue to manage affairs until the matter is resolved or further directions are issued during the next hearing.

The postponement is expected to draw attention within legal circles, as the Karachi Bar Association is one of the largest and most influential bar bodies in Pakistan. Observers note that internal governance issues and procedural disputes occasionally arise in bar elections, highlighting the importance of transparent electoral mechanisms within professional legal institutions.

No new date for the elections has been announced, and further proceedings will depend on the completion of the voter list verification process and compliance with regulatory requirements.
