Iran Allows Women to Ride Motorcycles Under New Law

Date:

Traffic code amended as women gain legal right to motorcycle training and licenses

Tehran, Iran | Web Desk: In a landmark move, Iran has officially granted women the legal right to ride motorcycles after amending its traffic laws, marking a significant shift after decades of restrictions.

According to international media reports, First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref has signed amendments to Iran’s traffic code, enabling women to receive formal motorcycle training, appear in driving tests, and obtain official licenses.

Although there was no explicit legal ban on women riding motorcycles in Iran, traffic police had long refused to issue licenses to female applicants. This legal ambiguity left women vulnerable, particularly in road accidents, where they lacked formal legal protection.

Under the new regulation, traffic police have been instructed to provide training, conduct examinations, and issue motorcycle driving licenses to eligible women applicants.

The decision comes amid ongoing economic and social protests in Iran, with critics viewing the move as a modest but symbolic step toward broader reforms and women’s rights in the country.
