PL-17 could challenge US air dominance in the Western Pacific with 400+ km strike range
Beijing, China – Web Desk: China’s latest and most mysterious long-range air-to-air missile, PL-17, has been revealed in its first public images. Defense analysts suggest that the PL-17 may be the world’s longest-range air-to-air missile, posing a significant threat to US air superiority in the Western Pacific.
The images circulating on Chinese social media show a PL-17 missile or its model mounted on a stand, with a person standing in front whose face has been digitally obscured. While most analysts believe the missile in the images is a model, it is believed to be life-size.
Part of China’s PL missile series, the PL-17 is designed for long-range targeting, complementing short-range PL-10, medium-range PL-11 and PL-12, and the long-range PL-15. PL-17 has reportedly been in development for over a decade but has never been displayed in military parades or exercises. Early images show it mounted on the J-16 fighter jet, China’s most powerful heavy multi-role fighter.
According to Pentagon reports and US defense analysts, the PL-17 could exceed 400 km (250 miles) in range, more than double the range of the US AIM-120D missile (160 km). The system may feature advanced AESA radar similar to the PL-15. The J-16 armed with PL-17 could have an attack reach exceeding 1,400 km, enhancing China’s aerial strike capabilities.
