2010 plane crash: Private airline ordered to pay Rs5bn compensation

Date:

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – The District and Sessions Court Islamabad has dismissed all eight appeals filed by a private airline in connection with the 2010 plane crash case and has ordered the airline to pay compensation exceeding Rs5.41 billion to the victims.

The court issued a detailed written verdict on all 16 appeals—eight from the victims and eight from the airline—delivered by Additional District and Sessions Judge Dr. Rasool Bakhsh Meraj. The ruling pertains to civil claims for damages resulting from the tragic incident.

According to the verdict, the airline is also fined Rs1 million per appeal, totaling Rs8 million, for filing unnecessary appeals and wasting the court’s time.

Under the decision, the following compensation amounts have been awarded to the victims: Samira Naveed Chaudhry and two others Rs143.189 million, Rashid Zulfiqar and four others Rs630.94 million, Mohammad Ilyas Rs1.101 billion, Gohar Rehman Rs507.348 million, Junaid Alzaman Hamid Rs996.048 million, Mohammad Javed Khan Rs857.025 million, Salma Rajput Rs572.666 million, and Retired Colonel Shamim Akhtar Rs606 million.

The victims had initially filed appeals against a civil judge’s earlier decision, which had allowed partial compensation capped at Rs10 million per individual. The high court had previously reviewed these appeals but later referred them back to the sessions court’s jurisdiction for final adjudication.
