Pakistan, Egypt Forge Stronger Ties in Politics, Defence, and Economy

Date:

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan and Egypt have agreed to deepen cooperation across political, defence, and economic spheres, pledging mutual support in counterterrorism efforts and regional stability.

The understanding was announced during a joint press conference in Islamabad by Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Egyptian Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Ahmed Mohamed Abdelatty.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

Welcoming his Egyptian counterpart, Dar emphasized that the visit aimed to further solidify ties between the two nations. He highlighted agreements to:

  • Expand political dialogue and defence collaboration
  • Launch a Pakistan–Egypt Business Forum, with its first meeting to be held in Cairo
  • Share a list of 250 Pakistani business houses with Egypt, covering diverse sectors, with another 250 to follow in six months

Dar noted that Pakistan views Egypt as a “key partner in the Muslim world,” adding that discussions also touched on pressing regional issues including Gaza, Jammu and Kashmir, and Afghanistan. He further announced Egypt’s decision to double scholarships for Pakistani students, particularly at Al-Azhar University.

Egypt’s Stand Against Terrorism

Dr. Abdelatty strongly condemned recent terrorist attacks in Pakistan, offering condolences for the victims in Islamabad and Peshawar. He reaffirmed Egypt’s solidarity with Pakistan in combating terrorism and extremism, pledging full cooperation in security matters.

He stressed that both countries share “historic ties based on mutual respect and common interests,” and outlined plans to boost trade and investment, particularly in agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and livestock.

Gaza Reconstruction and Regional Cooperation

Acknowledging Pakistan’s role in multilateral forums, Abdelatty praised Islamabad’s support for efforts toward a Gaza ceasefire. He expressed Egypt’s hope for Pakistan’s active participation in Gaza’s reconstruction, underscoring the need for a two-state solution in line with UN resolutions.

Earlier, the Egyptian foreign minister was received at the Foreign Office by Dar, followed by delegation-level talks focusing on economic and defence cooperation. Both sides reiterated their commitment to strengthening long-standing brotherly relations and jointly addressing shared challenges.
