Opposition’s TTAP stages countrywide protest

Date:

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The opposition alliance, Tehreek-e-Tahaffuz-e-Ayeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP), staged a protest outside Parliament House as part of its nationwide movement against the 27th Constitutional Amendment.

The 27th Amendment was passed by Parliament on 13 November and subsequently became law. Opposition parties strongly criticised the legislation, which introduced major structural changes in the judiciary and the military, while legal circles and both former and sitting judges termed it an attack on judicial independence.

On Friday, during a meeting, TTAP vowed to launch a strong protest movement to restore the Constitution to its original form. Under this plan, members of the allied parties gathered outside Parliament House today to register their protest.

Protesters held banners reading: “Down with dictatorship,” “Long live democracy,” “27th Amendment rejected,” and “Subjugation of judiciary means subjugation of the people.”

Those who attended the protest included TTAP Chairman Mehmood Khan Achakzai, Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen chief and TTAP Vice Chairman Senator Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja, and former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser.

Yesterday, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf members of the provincial assembly marched from the Punjab Assembly to Charing Cross to protest the amendment’s passage.

Last week, TTAP announced that a resolution against the 27th Amendment would be presented in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly.

Formed in April last year, the Tehreek-e-Tahaffuz-e-Ayeen-e-Pakistan is an alliance of six opposition parties, including PTI. In July, it formalized its organizational structure and pledged full support for all anti-government protest movements.
