Pakistan Parliament Approves 27th Amendment with Overwhelming Majority

Date:

ISLAMABAD: Following its approval in the Senate, Pakistan’s National Assembly has passed the 27th Constitutional Amendment with a two-thirds majority.
The bill received 234 votes in favour and only 4 against, marking one of the most decisive approvals in recent parliamentary sessions.
The session, presided over by Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, saw Federal Minister for Law Azam Nazeer Tarar formally presenting the motion for the amendment. Tarar informed the House that the framework and objectives of the 27th Amendment had already been laid before the Senate, adding that constitutional reform remains a continuous and evolving process in the country’s legislative journey.
Following the presentation, clause-by-clause voting was conducted on all 59 provisions of the amendment, each of which was passed by the Assembly. The tally showed 233 votes in support and 4 against, with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) standing as the only party to oppose the measure.
During the proceedings, the Law Minister also confirmed that Justice Yahya Afridi would continue to perform his duties as the Chief Justice of Pakistan, stressing the stability within the judicial structure as the constitutional changes take effect.
The session was marked by a moment of solidarity as senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Khurshid Shah attended the sitting in a wheelchair. Both former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif were seen approaching Shah to greet him and inquire after his health, a gesture that drew attention on the Assembly floor.
The passage of the 27th Constitutional Amendment now completes its approval through both Houses of Parliament.
