(Web Desk)- The Senate has approved the 27th Constitutional Amendment, introducing changes to clauses 4 and 7 of Article 243 of the Constitution.
The title of Chief of Army Staff has been changed to Commander of Defence Forces.
As per the new provisions, the President will appoint the Commander of Defence Forces—like the Air Chief and Naval Chief—on the advice of the Prime Minister. The position of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee will be abolished from November 27, 2025.
Additionally, the Prime Minister, on the recommendation of the Army Chief, will appoint the Commander of the National Strategic Command from among Pakistan Army officers, whose salary and allowances will be determined separately.
Under the amendment, the federal government may promote senior military officers to the ranks of Field Marshal, Air Marshal, or Admiral-in-Chief. These officers will retain their uniforms and privileges for life and be recognized as national heroes. They cannot be removed except under Article 47 of the Constitution.
The federal government will define the duties and responsibilities of these ranks, while the Field Marshal will enjoy legal immunity under Article 248.
